Since both the xmpp/jabber protocol pidgin accounts (googletalk and facebook) also use ssl and fail immediately, it implies that the proxy may not support it. i've had my best luck using socks4 and enabling the checkbox for remote DNS (this is actually socks4a) which pushes the DNS lookup onto the server machine. your solution worked great for a day or two but now I have the same problem… Pidgin cannot connect with Yahoo Messenger.

- Not currently experiencing this problem, though resolving scs.msg.yahoo.com with dig +notcp also currently works so I wouldn't expect it to be a problem currently.

When I'm in my home (direct internet connection, no router), I don't get any error, just the "Connecting..." message (See attached image - bottom screenshot).
I solve it with changing the pager server to IP rather than domain name. All other accounts function just fine. I downloaded and ran the official Yahoo client and have no problems connecting with that.
