I now find that the same thing is happening on every database on my laptop. I double-checked this in our versioning system. Anyone know why this is happening and how to fix it? It sounds to me like the third party has changed the definition of one of the types but kept the name and GUIDs the same. I guess my "solution" was: Although my company does have some (refurbished) (industrial-style) IBM PC's with XP Pro available at a good price that allowed VB6 installs in Windows 8 64 and there is lots of help out there to show you how. It was just easier to get a good XP machine at good price.
Personally, I don't use any Norton products that I know of right off the top of my head. I am running Office 2003. Hope that this helps someone out there! You can use DCOMbobulator to allow it to restart, or you can go to the Services control panel and restart it there.

It must be something with this machine, because when I copied the database to another computer, the VBA window opened OK.
