Your issue might even be in reading pagefile from harddrive - that might fit in with an error well into a gameplay session. Have you downloaded WMP since to be able to play this game? I can mount it read only but there are problems here and there (notes about directory loops). I wouldn't rule out corruption, it certain is possible, maybe bad blocks or something.
