Edited entity_translation/includes/translation.handler.inc again to uncomment line 1411. The module that broke the site was the entity module. http://drupal.org/node/1542390 happened because Entity API 7.x-1-rc2 depends on i18n 7.x-1.5. Your cache administrator is webmaster.

See http://drupal.org/node/416906 for some troubleshooting tips. In my case I rather stupidly had an 'archive' folder (why?!) in my module folder with another copy of of views module in it. I've tried clearing caches, and running database updates first, but no luck. Thanks plach, commenting out line 1411 did the trick for me.
